Lending Stuff's business model is:

people lend stuff to friends and strangers alike
take a cash deposit for the thing they lend out
use phone numbers and addresses to get in touch

There are no networks of trust, scores or the hiding of identity. People say who they are and list a few things they're prepared to lend out, along with the deposit value.

There are rules for lenders:

if something comes back broken, well it happens, still give the borrower their deposit back
because of (1), only list stuff you'll hardly ever use again or don't really care about

Neighbourhoods (part of a road, 1 or 2 streets)
Districts (10~100 streets)
Across Town
Special Groups (closed groups)

Within each category are lists which can be printed out. For example:

Ask Gumtree to try a "Stuff to Borrow" catagory (done 09.03.07- http://brighton.gumtree.com/cgi-bin/show_posting.pl?posting_id=8477442)
Ask Freecycle Brighton the same
Geo-local feed into froogle.com - the US site has geo-search for products - a feed would allow local stuff to borrow to show up when people were looking to buy things. The UK version has no geo-search facility.

Rules for lenders:

If you don't know a borrower by sight, ask for a cash deposit
If something comes back broken, well it happens, still give the borrower their deposit back
